Ever wonder why even after following all of your regular skincare steps, your face just doesn’t look right? It could be because you didn’t allow your skincare to really sink in, meaning you haven’t properly reaped the benefits of your products.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to get the most out of your regime:
- Wake up few minutes than your normal day time to do your cleansing routine and to apply your make up instead of doing it while commuting on the train and the underground. (Remember that you are surrounded by bacteria and germs during that daily journey and you could be contaminating your entire make up kit as well as your face too).
- Start the morning by rinsing your face with warm water. Once you pat dry with your face towel and then you’re ready to begin.
- Cleanse your whole face and neck with your chosen cleanser, using gentle circular motions and long strokes, taking care not to tug on your skin. It is generally best to use a circular sponge to apply your cleanser on and then remove your make up with. Much better hygiene and you can clean thoroughly the sponges after use and keep them to dry in a clean surface.
- Remove with a cotton pad or clean sponges and rinse clean with warm water, before using another cotton pad and some toner to eliminate any leftover cleanser. Allow one to two minutes drying time or just pat dry with a tissue.
- Next, it’s time to moisturise. Please note that if you use a serum in addition to a moisturiser, you should also use this technique. Use a plastic or wooden spatula to take the right amount of moisturiser from the pot to avoid transporting the bacteria and germ from your fingers directly into the pot of cream. Then apply to your face and neck, and around the eyes and lips if the cream is suitable for that areas. Then wait for two-three minutes for it to sink in to your skin.
- Always choose a transdermal moisturiser – this means the moisturiser is designed to get soaked in the deep layer of the skin called the dermis where all the main components of the skin are to regenerate the cells and the fibres and hydrate them to stay supple.
- If you prime your skin before applying make-up, ensure your face is dry and apply much like you did the moisturiser. Allow up to five minutes for the primer to sink in so that you have a perfect base on which to apply your make-up.
Following these recommendations will ensure your skin reaps the benefits of every step in your skincare regimen, and will assist in a more even make-up application. Always remember – a good hygiene and good practice prevent your skin from getting ill and full of blemishes and certainly looking grey. No matter how much make up you can cover your face with, your skin will still not look good and healthy if you ill-treat it by shortcutting your daily routine.
Saint Valentine’s Day, commonly shortened to Valentine’s Day, is an annual commemoration held on February 14 celebrating love and affection between intimate companions. The day is named after one or more early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine, and was established by Pope Gelasius I in 496 AD. It was deleted from the General Roman Calendar of saints in 1969 by Pope Paul VI. It is traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as “valentines“). The day first became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.
Modern Valentine’s Day symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid.
Historical facts
Numerous early Christian martyrs were named Valentine. The Valentines honored on February 14 are Valentine of Rome (Valentinus presb. m. Romae) and Valentine of Terni (Valentinus ep. Interamnensis m. Romae). Valentine of Romeas a priest in Rome who was martyred about AD 269 and was buried on the Via Flaminia. His relics are at the Church of Saint Praxed in Rome, and at Whitefriar Street Carmelite Church in Dublin, Ireland.
Valentine of Ternibecame bishop of Interamna (modern Terni) about AD 197 and is said to have been martyred during the persecution under Emperor Aurelian. He is also buried on the Via Flaminia, but in a different location than Valentine of Rome. His relics are at the Basilica of Saint Valentine in Terni (Basilica di San Valentino).
The Catholic Encyclopedia also speaks of a third saint named Valentine who was mentioned in early martyrologies under date of February 14. He was martyred in Africa with a number of companions, but nothing more is known about him.
No romantic elements are present in the original early medieval biographies of either of these martyrs. By the time a Saint Valentine became linked to romance in the 14th century, distinctions between Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni were utterly lost.
In the 1969 revision of the Roman Catholic Calendar of Saints, the feast day of Saint Valentine on February 14 was removed from the General Roman Calendar and relegated to particular (local or even national) calendars for the following reason: “Though the memorial of Saint Valentine is ancient, it is left to particular calendars, since, apart from his name, nothing is known of Saint Valentine except that he was buried on the Via Flaminia on February 14. The feast day is still celebrated in Balzan (Malta) where relics of the saint are claimed to be found, and also throughout the world by Traditionalist Catholics who follow the older, pre-Second Vatican Council calendar. February 14 is also celebrated as St Valentine’s Day in other Christian denominations; it has, for example, the rank of ‘commemoration’ in the calendar of the Church of England and other parts of the Anglican Communion.

What is Scleroderma?
The word “Scleroderma” means “hard skin”. However, many people with Scleroderma have problems not only with their skin but with other parts of their bodies as well. This is the reason why it has a second name “systemic sclerosis”.
Scleroderma is an uncommon, chronic (persistent) disease. It affects the connective tissues which surround the joints, blood vessels and internal organs beneath the affected area of the skin. Women are affected three to four times more often than men. The disease usually starts between the ages of 25 and 50. It only occasionally begins in children or in the elderly.
Although there is no cure, proper treatment and care can make it possible for people with scleroderma to lead full and productive lives. There may be however some limitation on your activity.
What are the 2 types of Scleroderma?
There are 2 major types of Scleroderma:
- Localised Scleroderma (sometimes called “morphoea”). In this condition changes only occur in isolates areas of the skin and the tissues beneath it. It is relatively mild and does not affect interval organs.
- Systemic Sclerosis. With this condition changes may occur in the skin and also in a number of internal organs. These might include blood vessels, joints, the digestive system (Oesophagus, stomach and bowel), and occasionally the lungs, heart, kidneys and muscles. Changes in the connective tissue may affect the function of any of these organs.
Scleroderma differs from person to person. It is hard to predict how the disease will develop in each individual. But it usually affects only a few parts of the body and it often stabilises after a few years. How badly affected you are depends on which organs are affected. People who have the localised disease do not develop generalised factors.
What is the cause of Scleroderma?
The cause of Scleroderma is unknown. It is not contagious and it is not passes on directly from one generation to another. However as is the case with many other diseases, some families seem more likely to get it than others. The connective tissue cells of people who have Scleroderma produce too much of a protein called Collagen. Collagen is essential for holding the body together, but if there is too much the body becomes stiff and is unable to function properly.
The small blood vessels are also damaged in Scleroderma. There may be a link between the build-up of excess collagen and blood vessel changes. The excess collagen is like scar tissue. It causes thickening and stiffening of those parts of the body it affects. The immune system may be important in causing the collagen to be deposited. It occasionally seems to be triggered by some unusual chemical exposure. Scleroderma is probably caused by a
combination of different genetic and environmental factors.
How does it start and what effects does it have?
Scleroderma is a variable, slow, and long-term disorder. It usually starts slowly, gradually gets worse over a few years and then stabilises. Sometimes it progresses faster. Occasionally it seems to cure itself. Its severity and effects vary. However, sever disability with Scleroderma is uncommon.
An early symptom of Scleroderma is an extreme sensitivity to cold, called Raynaud’s phenomenon. Here the blood vessels constrict or narrow. Sometimes all it takes to trigger this response is for the person to walk into a cold room or to reach into the refrigerator. The narrowing of the blood vessels causes the blood supply to be greatly reduced, fingers and toes turn white and then blue. Often numbness and tingling are felt in the fingers and toes. When the blood vessels open again blood starts to flow, the skin colour returns to normal, and the hands become warm. Most people with Raynaud’s do not get Scleroderma, but most of those with Scleroderma have Raynaud’s at some stage in their illness.
Another common early symptom of Scleroderma is swelling of the hands and feet, especially in the morning. The skin of the fingers and toes may look and feel swollen. It might get shiny and the usual skin creases may disappear. The facial skin may seem stiff. Scleroderma can also cause inflammation of the joints. This may be accompanied by pain, stiffness, warmth and tenderness. Muscle weakness is sometimes an early symptom of Scleroderma.
What tests will be done?
There is no single test for Scleroderma. A number of laboratory tests and other studies may be needed to help find out if you have Scleroderma, and what parts of the body are affected. Tests may need to be repeated at regular intervals in order to monitor your disease. Tests may include blood samples, x-rays, breathing tests, a heart scan and a skin biopsy. Scleroderma is a complicated disease and differs in its effects on different people. Therefore it may be necessary for the doctor to see you regularly. If you are severely affected you may have to spend some time in hospital while tests are performed and special treatment is given.
What is the treatment?
There is no wonder drug or miracle cure for Scleroderma. Treatment consists of exercise, care of the skin, and various drugs to help control the condition or treat complications.
- Exercise and joint protection: An exercise programme is one of the most important activities to minimise the effects of the disease. Regular exercise helps keep the skin flexible, reduces contractures of the fingers and keeps the blood flowing freely. Gentle exercises are needed to keep the affected joints moving.
- Skin Care and Warmth: The aim is to keep a good supply of blood flowing to the skin to protect it from cracking, peeling and ulcerating. Keeping warm from top to toe helps open the blood vessels to the arms, hands, legs and feet; these are the coldest parts in chilly weather. Remember to wear a hat, as a great deal of body heat is lost from uncovered head. You might consider thermal clothing, hand-warmers, and electrically-heated gloves and socks. Dressings can protect painful or broken skins. In order to keep the skin as supple as possible, avoid using strong detergents or other substances that irritate your skin. Many brands of soap, creams and bath oils are designed to prevent dry skin. If you smoke it would be sensible to stop, as smoking reduces the blood flow to your skin.
- Drugs: Some drugs work for some people and not for others. To treat Raynaud’s phenomenon, drugs that cause the blood vessels to dilate or become larger are prescribed. There are several of these and they may be given orally, applied to the skin or injected into a vein. To soften the skin, several anti-fibrotic or anti-collagen drugs may be tried. Fibrosis is the formation of excessive fibrous tissue and these drugs are intended to help prevent this. To prevent Heartburn, the doctor may prescribe some antacids or a drug to lower the production of acid in the stomach. If your joints are inflamed a number of different drugs may be used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. High Blood pressure sometimes occurs, but may cause no visible signs. It needs treating to prevent problems later. Several drugs are available to control the blood. Steroids which are synthetic forms of a hormone (cortisone) that occurs naturally in the body also reduce pain and inflammation.
- Diet: There is no evidence that diet either causes or has much effect on Scleroderma. However the disease can cause you to lose weight, and some people have trouble with swallowing and heartburn. Therefore try to have balanced meals and try to stay at your normal weight.
DMK – Facial Treatments from Danné Montague-King
Danné Montague-King is a scientist, cosmetic chemist and worldwide leader in the field of skin rejuvenation. He has worked with some of the leading physicians and surgeons throughout the world to elevate the importance of proper skin care for healthy skin maintenance, surgical alternatives, scar revision and pre & post-operative care. After 40 years in the skincare industry and the success of the DMK range of skincare and clinic treatments, Danné introduces DMK Cosmetics – a new dimension in corrective makeup.
The DMK unique range of skincare products is based on enzyme therapy. When properly formulated, enzymes can help remove dead protein, toxins and other effluvia from the epidermis using a process called ‘reverse osmosis’. The DMK products act not only on the surface of the skin but the Enzyme Treatments work with the skin. The enzymes strengthen the structural integrity of the skin to create a healthy environment for cells to live and thrive in while Enzyme Therapy exercises facial muscles and works to leave the skin feeling firm.
As this is a full skincare and treatment-based brand, it’s recommended to visit the clinic initially to establish your skin needs and what problem areas
need to be addressed. Choose your protection products from the Home Prescriptives range and this is what I especially like about DMK; it’s a range of individually tailored products with pure botanical ingredients to work with your skin.
If you decide to purchase the products first you can then book for your appointment for a specific custom designed treatment covering, as far as I can
see, everything we want to make our skin healthy, youthful and glowing. The signature Enzyme Therapy facial will aid the skin in removing dead skin cells, it will flush fresh blood and nutrients throughout the skin network and improve lymphatic drainage to detoxify the skin, for £125, is good value.
There is a wide range of facial treatments from instant ‘pick me ups’ to peels. The PROZYME ‘dead skin cell muncher’ treatment; an enzyme exfoliator works to remove cellular debris and build up, leaving the skin clear and smoother and importantly more responsive to topical skincare treatments.
The MELANOZONE would appeal to many of us who have uneven skin tone and patchiness. DMK has developed this brilliant new treatment to even out skin tone and colour, whilst restoring a healthy natural glow. For acne free skin the HYDRADERMAZE advanced treatment program performed over 12 weeks is designed to clear acne and congestion. This treatment plus the custom products can achieve long term results for clearing the condition ensuring it will not return. There are effective peels and laser treatments to energise you skin, revitalize sun-damaged and sluggish skin and a wonderful EYE FUSION TREAMENT to brighten and regenerate tired, eyes with dark circles, puffiness or fine lines.
Also, recently DMK has extended its unique, holistic skin concept into makeup, calling it a new dimension in corrective makeup. Danné has developed an effective range of cosmetic mediums and bases with the aim of achieving remedial makeup solutions for clients who suffered from acne or other skin anomalies.
Deborah Hutton, Media Presenter and DMK brand ambassador tells why she endorses DMK and explains why it has been so beneficial to her professionally and personally. Click here to read more about:
Every once in a while, our hair deserves some spoiling treatment, after all, it is one of our most beautiful assets. However it is damaged easily by brushing, straightening or curling. Hormonal imbalances, stress or dieting can also affect our hair. Here are three easy treatments to rejuvenate your hair for you to try.
1.Mint for clean, shiny hair
Many shampoos have mint essence in their composition. Mint actually has very good cleaning properties and it acts like an antiseptic. If your hair is normal or greasy, you can use the following recipe: Boil a cup of mint leaves in one litre of water for about 25 minutes. Filter the mixture and apply it on your hair after shampooing. Rinse the hair.
2. Olive oil for hydration
If your hair or scalp skin is dry, olive oil masks can do wonders. Recipe: Slightly warm the olive oil. Massage the hair with it than wrap it into a towel. Let the mask on your hair for about 20 minutes. Rinse thoroughly.
3. Use an egg mask for volume
Recipe: one egg and 200 grams of natural yoghurt. Mix the two ingredients and apply the mask on your hair. Massage the scalp and let it work for few minutes. Rinse the hair thoroughly. Try taking care of your hair using natural ingredients in between visits to your stylist.

DMK (Dr Danne Montague-King) believes that the origin of most skin conditions is a result of disharmony within the skin. Using the principles of biochemistry, DMK has formulated a range of treatments and products designed to educate skin to perform like youthful healthy skin. By matching formulations with the body’s chemistry, the skin is encouraged to respond in a positive manner. DMK’s revolutionary concept of REMOVE, REBUILD, PROTECT, MAINTAIN aims to match an individual’s biochemistry with the appropriate skin therapy. Botanical-based paramedical products make up the DMK skin care program.
- Remove
Remove the dead skin cell build-up, which leads to the appearance of dry skin, fine lines, congested skin or skin discolouration. DMK uses enzymatic hydrolysation, a treatment that transforms dead cell material into a weak acid and flushes it away, bringing new skin cells to the surface.
- Rebuild
Rebuild skin by encouraging the skin’s vital internal processes to function optimally, enabling cells to stay alive longer and perform at their highest potential, creating healthier, younger looking skin. DMK oils, serums, spritzes and crèmes work directly on the skin cells with DMK’s unique ‘direct delivery’. These are designed to provide natural skin tone and moisture.
- Protect
Protect the skin from the sun, free radicals, glycosilation and other environmental factors that lead to premature ageing using potent natural antioxidants.
- Maintain
Maintain beautiful skin with DMK Home Prescriptives which work to prolong the results achieved by DMK Professional Treatments. The DMK concept provides clients with lifelong skin management programs to incorporate into their daily lives.
